Can You Take Too Many Supplements? “Doc Talks” with Dr. Daniel Nuzum

Dr. Daniel Nuzum: How do you know when you’re taking too many supplements?

Well, let me just put it to you this way. I’ve been in clinical practice for over 20 years. I have been in nutritional practice for that entire time. Multiple times, I have had people come to me, and they’ve got an entire garbage bag full of supplements; they’re taking 60-70-80-100. I think 137 supplements, that was the record of any patient that came to see me. They were taking 137 supplements.

Here’s the thing. If you’re taking that many, something’s wrong. You don’t need a bottle of every nutrient/supplement. Your body doesn’t metabolize things that way. If you are taking a supplement, you want it to be—you want your body to recognize it as a food. If you’re taking 90 different chemicals, your body will recognize them as chemicals.

So, if you’re taking zinc, calcium, magnesium, boron, manganese, selenium, and every one of the minerals, and then you’re taking B1, B2, B3, B4, B5, B6, B7… And A, and D, and E, and K. Every one of these supplements individually.

Your body will eventually not recognize them as supplements, and it will recognize them as something that is toxic. And what it will do is it will start eliminating them.

We see this, I’ll give you an example, I actually did an article here recently on magnesium, and how people would take large amounts of magnesium and correct all their magnesium deficiencies. Their lab tests would show they were low in magnesium, they supplemented, they were good in magnesium.

It went on at the same dose, high dose of magnesium, and not too far down the road they were actually either back down where they started, or they actually were worse off than they started, and they were taking large amounts of magnesium.

So, the first thing is, they were taking one single nutrient. Nowhere in the food kingdom, unless you’re eating rocks, you’re not going to find a single nutrient. That doesn’t normally occur.

So, you want your body to recognize what you’re taking as food. So, you take fruit; you take vegetables. What they have is they have a wide range of vitamins and minerals. You’ve got all these vitamins, all these different minerals. They may not have mega doses of any one of them, but you’re going to have many of these things represented.

Typically, most plants, most things that produce, the herb, or fruit, or vegetable, or those types of things, have on average right around 300 different nutrients. So, in that context, when you’re getting these small amounts of individual nutrients together, the body recognizes that as food.

When you’re taking 20-30 different pills of single nutrients, your body has a hard time with those. And I’ve seen cases where we’re seeing elevated liver enzymes and things like that, because the person was taking too many individual vitamin and mineral supplements. And it got to where the liver just couldn’t metabolize each of those things.

When we took and brought them down to two, maybe three supplements, that had a little bit of all of the different things that they were taking, the liver enzymes went back to normal, and they were all fine again. And they actually felt better.

So, with nutritional deficiencies, we’re trying to correct them. Correcting them with one particular nutrient, or two nutrients, individual nutrients, only helps for a very short amount of time, because the body will adapt.

We’re taking combinations and putting them together, creating a new superfood. And these superfoods are things that your body will easily recognize as food. And when it recognizes food, it knows what to do with that.

So, even if you’re taking every supplement in the line, they’re designed so that you’re not getting too much of any one particular ingredient or nutrient so that they work well together, and again, they’re recognized by your body as food.

  2. I am wondering about the absorption of some of the supplements. I understand that turmeric is better absorbed by adding pepper or piperine. Why not is this not used in your supplements?
